Pilates vs Yoga. Which is Better?

This is an extremely common question but there really is no answer to it. Neither is better than the other because each have their own unique benefits. What really matters is what you prefer.

To know which is better for you, you’re going to need to know the differences between yoga and Pilates. They do seem similar but in reality, the objectives of each form is very different. To make matters more complicated, there are many different types of yoga and Pilates.

A comparison between the two is difficult, to say the least.

Firstly, yoga originated in India about 50 centuries ago whereas Pilates was only created during the 1920’s by Joseph Pilates. So, yoga has had a lot of time to evolve and be interpreted and modified by various yogis. Pilates has less variation and history.

The second most obvious difference between the two is that yoga is much more spiritual. The goal is a mind, body and spirit connection. Pilates is more focused on strengthening the body, especially the powerhouse area. Pilates was designed to rehabilitate and strengthen which is why it’s extremely popular among people who are involved in physically demanding arts.

As mentioned earlier, yoga has evolved more. A yoga class can have modified yoga poses that specifically cater to the different needs of the individuals. It could be strengthening, healing, flexibility, breathing, spiritual or even done in hot rooms like Bikram yoga.

Pilates is more structured and the classes are mostly similar. There is some variation but it’s nowhere close to the variations that yoga has.

Both arts have certification and accreditation boards. If you are joining a class, make sure your instructor is properly certified and knows what he or she is doing. You would be surprised at the number of self-taught individuals who pass themselves off as instructors without any proper certification.

Yoga uses the body’s weight as for resistance whereas Pilates uses bodyweight and machines in the workouts.

Yoga also places much more emphasis on deep breathing which is known as pranayama. Core training is a part of yoga but unlike Pilates it is not the main focus. Meditation is also an important part of many yoga styles. This is not the case with Pilates.

If you’re still on the fence and do not know which style to choose, you should give both disciplines a try. Go for at least 3 classes of each and see which suits your personality and temperament.

If you like a harder workout, then Pilates may be better for you since it will strengthen your body and give you the lean, lithe shape. People with certain injuries that can be rehabilitated with Pilates, would be better off doing Pilates.

If you prefer the calmer, more meditative yoga, then by all means go for a few yoga classes. The deep breathing techniques will do wonders for you.

Neither one is better than the other. It all depends on you. What truly matters is that you choose one and make it a part of your life. You will reap rewards in the future when you are stronger, healthier and well-balanced.
