Can You Learn Pilates from a Video or Do You Need an Instructor?

Pilates can be learnt from a video and it can be learnt from a professional instructor. People have done both successfully. Which one will be suitable for you depends on several factors.

The first is your budget. There is absolutely no question that it is much cheaper to just get a Pilates video from Amazon and follow what the instructor on the video is showing. You only pay for the video once and you can repeatedly watch it and follow.

You can also follow the video in the convenience of your own home. Some people are shy to join a Pilates class and may feel self-conscious or intimidated. Others just do not like being surrounded by other people when they are working out. Either way, following a video puts an end to all these issues.

If your budget is tight or you prefer doing Pilates alone, go ahead and get a video. Do remember to check if the instructor on the video is a trained professional. Look for reviews about the video and see if other people found it useful.

Most Pilates DVDs will focus on the 6 core principles of Pilates. Do note that there are beginner and advanced videos. Make sure you get the correct skill level video for yourself. Also, you should check that the DVD is formatted for the zone that you live in.

If you decide to get a professional instructor, you will most probably be doing your Pilates in a Pilates facility. You should go down to the facility and look at the environment you will be working out in. Is it clean and pleasant? Or does it seem dodgy and dirty?

The classes should not be overcrowded. It would be a good idea to visit a class and see how the lesson is conducted. Is it fast paced? Is the instructor keeping a close eye on the students and guiding them.

What about your instructor?

You need to find one that you are comfortable with. Some women prefer having a female instructor. The instructor you choose needs to be professionally trained too.

As you progress through the classes, you will get better. So, the classes need to cater to intermediate and advanced students too. Ask your instructor if the classes will progress in difficulty as time progresses.

A good Pilates studio will have a few instructors, classes at different times, mats, equipment, private and group sessions, etc. The better the studio, the more costly it will be.

The point to note is that even if you can learn Pilates from a video, it will be far more beneficial to learn it from a trained instructor. They will be able to guide you and correct any mistakes you may be making without your knowledge. If you are strapped for cash, you do not have to sign up for a yearly membership.

About 3 to 5 classes will give you enough knowledge on the fundamentals so that your execution of the movements will be correct. Once you have a good grasp of the basics, you will be able to do Pilates on your own or with guided instruction. In a matter of time, Pilates will be a part of your life and you will not be able to imagine a life without it.
